I was poking around the interwebz a few weeks ago and saw that the band Living Color was playing locally at a jazz club.

Wow, I did not know they were still touring but I was stoked to say the least.

I talked to my wife and we decided this was not to be missed.

I did not know what to expect since the last time I saw them live was in the early 90s – more than 2 decades ago. Eeeeek.

I still remember being super bummed that I could not attend the first Lollapalooza as I was not old enough at the time to attend a concert by myself. I was able to see the one next year though, which was a head spinner to look back at 40,000 people outside on Harriet Island rocking out all day. I was able to see Living Color live finally though about a year later.

Fast forward through time as I am now 41 years old and not 17 years old, would one of the stage roadies wheel all the members out as they attempted to play songs that were recorded in the late 80s and early 90s?

It was 180 degrees from that as they put on an amazing live show.

Living Color “Cult of Personality” 1988

I literally thought they were cryogenically frozen in 1993 and pulled out of cold storage a day before the show, pointed towards the stage with instructions to go kill it.

Corey’s vocals sounded like they were pulled directly off the master itsself. Vernon’s guitar playing live was actually better than the CD as he added new twists and turns yet could play with the same speed. I was curious to how old he was since he looked almost the same now as the last time I saw them live. He is 57 years old and does not look a day over his mid 30s.

Living Colour – Love Rears Its Ugly Head (live)

Doug Wimbish the bass player did not miss a chord and performed a killer bass solo. Other than Les Claypool from Primus, I have not seen a bass solo ever in a live show. And he killed it.

The drumming was on point by skin basher Will Calhoun including his drum solo.

They played most songs from “Vivid” and “Time/s Up” CDs for almost 2 hours.

Living Colour – Cult of Personality (Guitar Live 2015)

Truly an amazing night to see them perform. It also helped that we were literally 12 feet from the stage in a club that held 250 people max.

If they are coming to your city, don’t miss them. Ticket prices may be a bit higher due to the small clubs, but treat yourself to an amazing experience.

A huge thanks to all the members for continuing to perform music for close to 25 years. Anyone who can make living from the music industry in any fashion for that length of time is worthy of mad respect.

Check out this great chat with Vernon Reid on Jamey Jasta’s podcast HERE.

Thank you to all the members for an amazing live show. Keep it up.
